Abstract

Sounds provoke a variety of physiologic responses that can be measured by electrophysiologic techniques. Evoked potentials can be extracted from the brain waves recorded through electrodes applied to the scalp. There are about 14 more waves, which appear through several hundred milliseconds. Those seen within 10 msec. of stimulus onset are generated by neural structures inside the brainstem.
It is a very important audiometry for the evaluation of hearing threshold in the patients such as infants, mentally retarded or unconscious patients, malingerers and patients with brainstem organic diseases.
In these patients, ABR is very useful in checking of auditory thresholds and in localizing the sites of lesion in otoneurologic diseases. There are multiple factors affecting the ABR patterns. So, standardization of test procedures and interpretation of obtained data are necessary for accurate information of patients in each laboratories and clinics.
